25th Anniversary of Unreal Tournament

Post by fudgonaut »

As Leo(T.C.K.) mentioned in antoher post, the 25th Anniversary of Unreal Tournament is on the horizon.

Is anybody aware if Epic has any plans to mark that milestone?

Recently I’ve been playing around with retexturing one of the stock maps. A stock map redux project might be cool.

There are any number of cool things that could be done to honor of UT99’s 25th year.

I guess the real question is: does anyone in the community have the time, interest, and ideas to collaborate on something? Or is the game simply too old to attract that level of enthusiasm?

Thoughts?

Rumours are they're going to release UT3 on the EGS with Steam crossplay, there has been activity on the Steam front for UT3 at least. Then again, Fortnite exists. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Mapping ideas? What about taking existing maps and remixing them? Too cliché?

I have plenty of resources for your Egyptian texture needs.

I've been playing around with Hydro16, trying to clean up the look by using textures that aren't so grungy. I'm also thinking about a Phobos upgrade.

I'd certainly be willing to take a shot at upgrading textures & skyboxes for maps. I've also got a couple player skins that have been sitting around. A 25th Anniversary project would be great motivation to finish them.

Not sure why Epic would try to resurrect that installment, it seemed to be the least popular in the franchise. I never could get into it anyway.

By remixing, do you mean like UnrealGGecko's concept to do an Egyptian version of DM-Liandri? I think that'd be cool.

More than that. See the UT99.org version of Morbias (Morbias4) from the CMP? Well, that, but applied to maps other than Morbias.

Just downloaded the map and ran through it. Yeah, that's exactly what I had in mind :tu:

I was thinking something that was more collaborative, that's maybe more than just maps. I'm just spit-balling here:
  • New skins / models
  • Visual FX and bells & whistles, maybe using Shadow's UTSDK 2.0
  • Voice packs
  • What else?
(I mean, if it ends up just being 25th Anniversary maps, there's nothing wrong with that!)

Love that map. To me the superior version of Morbias. 8)

The big UT99.org Community Map was also not a contest but a colab every participants made a part of the map ... maybe a mappack with really strange but good looking maps could be a good thing.

Automatically merged

It could still have a badge for those who like to implement it ...like a brand, löl.

Do any of you have any hope that Epic will apply some open-source license to the old UT engine source code on the quarter century anniversary of UT?

Shouldn't it be rather 23th birthday anniversary?

The whole point is to generate interest & get people participating now, not two years from now. Creating quality content takes time, especially when we all have jobs and family and and other real-life obligations.
