Fresh install- What to download

Post by Furioso »

I haven't played UT 99 for a long time.
So, if I do a fresh UT GOTY installations, what files would you recommend to install for simply playing the game?
Patches? Textures?

What I want to do next: Joining an UDK team (uncertain however) and improve 3D modelling and texture editing skills

The GOTY edition already has the bonus packs.
What about the UTPG patches? And improved visuals?
EDIT: I remember a patch for 3d sound too.

I dont advise using any of the UTPG 451 patches, The UTDC anticheats will kick you from most servers. Those patches are for server side only, not client. Use the 436 NoDelta patch and the bonus pack4 umod. As far as visuals, you can install opengl compressed textures and S3fix then modify your ini. The patch you remember for the sound is a creative labs EAX enhancement for those who use those sound cards.

Have fun!..... :bio:

First thing after a fresh install is the 4.36 patch. Any decent server will send you the rest of the files you need :)

then there are renderers.

For nvidia cards there is an updated open g/l driver which makes UT rock --->

If you use openGL as a renderer for UT then this is one of the most important downloads you will ever need.

http://cwdohnal.home.mindspring.com/utglr/

A Tweaked out openGL driver for the best game on the planet. Just click "The latest stable OpenGL" and follow the "Install Instructions" a little further down the page.

IF using an ATI based Video card.
If you use Direct 3d as your renderer I'd recommend using TNSE's Direct3d renderer instead of the default. http://www.apbs47.dsl.pipex.com/ut/D3DTNSeDrv.zip Though I dont use Direct3d anymore I have tried this renderer out, and it does quite well.

I've been using v451 (client) since it came out with no problems =)

Id recommend getting the UT Cache Cleaner. If you're downloading alot of stuff from redirects and servers (which after a fresh install you definitely will be doing!) you can run the cache cleaner and it will save all those maps and mods that u downloaded automatically and put them into the correct UT folders. Otherwise, the cache files would get deleted and you'd have to keep downloading from the servers again ;)

Oooh, there seems to be a new version out: http://modsquad.beyondunreal.com/review.php?id=47

Ok, according to the Beyond Unreal essential files wizard (http://www.beyondunreal.com/main/ut/utessential.php) I only need to install BP4, because patch 436 is already included with the GOTY edition from the "Totally Unreal" pack.

So what about the renderers?
Do I need the beta OpenGL renderer from Epic on the above mentioned site to use S3TC textures or is it already included in my version?
Could someone please make a compilation of all the available renderers and their advantages and disadvantages? May be that could be added to the "Tips&Tricks" section too.

the open g/l renderer from epic is old and outdated. The links i posted are people who maintain and update those renderer's. Its quite simple. IF you use an nvidia card use the open g/l (unless on vista, vista has no support for open g/l) If using an ati card try out one of the new D3D renderer's for optimal performance. I have seen increases of 30-80 FPS using the new updated UT renderers.

get the openGL driver from the i4G site:

http://www.i4games.eu/downloads/ut/opengldrv.zip

Just paste it in your system folder.

It works as a charm for me and alot of people I gave the link to. :agree1:

Dont install the S3tc texture pack it causes so many graphics problems!!
There is a work-around to make them work with modern graphics cards, but I haven't tried it, or know anyone who has.
Let me go find the link...

here we go: http://gla.soth.sk/?pg=s3tc
A detailed walk through for the process ;)
Let me know if you try it! =)

For rendering your going to want the latest version of Direct3D 8 available here: http://www.ut-files.com/Video_Renders/D ... 3d8r14.zip (don't listen to everybody else who uses OpenGL). IF YOUR GOING TO USE CD2 TEXTURES READ THIS: you need change the settings on your renderer before you install these textures. To change the settings: Start up UT, open your system console, and type in preferences and then hit enter. After that click on the + on rendering and then the + on Direct3D 8. After that scroll down until you see something that says use S3TC or something like that and change it to true. The CD 2 textures cause problems with character animations online, but there's a fix that the link for it is right here: http://hermskii.com/Files/S3TC-Texture-Fix-03-01-07.zip

I'll post another reply showing you my Direct3D 8 settings.

These are the settings I use:

NOTES:
You can set the frame rate limit to whatever you want
Change swap interval to 1 (not -1)
You might want to change No AA Tiles to false
0 = default on refresh rate I recommend setting it to whatever your monitor supports (example: if your monitor refreshes at 60Hz set the refresh rate to 60)

Got one more post after this

Last post on rendering:

You want to download the demo version of the extension pack (Correction you NEED to download) the link for it is right here: http://www.moddb.com/mods/9974/unrealto ... ip-version

One last thing:

If you look in your UnrealTournament directory in a folder called system you'll find a text file called Unreal Tournament. If you scroll through it you'll find a line under [Engine.GameEngine] that says: CacheSizeMegs=4

If you want to, you can assign more RAM to UT99 (I have 384 assigned) just make sure you don't assign more than a third of your system's RAM to it.

not to burst your bubble but ut-files.com is not a reliable source for renderers :P
