Fixing Cow / Old Models ?

Post by JohnnySix »

Not sure if a programming question per-se, or even if possible to repackage existing models / sounds etc.

I managed to find one of my old models from 2004 - looks like the original blend mode doesn't work with Vulkan / Latest renderers? :noidea

Here's the original SkinCity shots

Oh yeah, the cow part..

In 2007 - I was looking to make a cow for UTIII - never got beyond concepts , but wondered if

A: There is still a 'fixed' NaliCow Model around that has the fixes for custom skins or

B: If there's a working method to export / import stuff between Blender > UT99 still, I feel I could probably make something UT99 standard 8)

IDK what wrong, but for me model work without problem. 469f Preview here. But I suspect on 469e it will be fine as well.

For export import Blender to ut99 can be used 3rd party plugins which make psk, psa.
Or goes through milkshape.

Thanks @Buggie , for fixing the link also! :D

I got the cow exported using UTPackageTool and the 3ds import add-on for Blender4.x

Going to sift through the animation frames for a t-pose to paint.

You can try use Milkshape for open .3d file and export to something more suitable.

Messing around with texture painting in Blender, don't know if it can do anything as sophisticated as z-brush or photoshop with dynamic brushes yet, just using the default round brush.

The cow has some very strange UVW's

I say, compared to the Nali UV map is the cow actually pretty easy.
The Nali skin has so many distortion.

Hmm - has been a solid 20 years I reckon since the last model/skin I added. If there was a way to import custom skeletal animations, I could redo the cow skin mapping and some animations.

Having pulled into the game , it looks like I wasn't using the correct mesh ( or I'd attempted some clean-up in blender and forgot ) when I did the painting :loool:

Got a two-face cow :D

** Update **

Fixed the face / mapping - the UV's in the game don't seem to match the ones exported, not sure if it's where I've merged verts / cleared seams etc when bringing into blender. I didn't alter any of the UV mapping.

Here it is in blender at 2048^2 before getting reduced to 256^2 - have blended all the faces together, maybe at a lower resolution these don't 'line-up' as nicely?

There's also a strange UV error on one quad on the in-game mesh on the left leg.

this is awsome, very nice, so you can paint on the texture and then import it? so basicly you 3d paint?
im not sure what you mean with "If there was a way to import custom skeletal animations, I could redo the cow skin mapping and some animations."
offcourse you can rig it but then you need to reanimate all vertex animation, im not sure how NSQ did it with is male commando.

you know UT supports skeletal right? i dont know any limitations, only the amount of work.

Back in the day, I used a robot skeleton from Xan Mk II for the Impossible Mission robot - but yeah, since cow is vertex , if I wanted to fix up the geometry / uv's or add some new stuff like different faces / accessories, I'd have to do it all from scratch, and am not sure how easy it is to create a *new* skeletal animation.
