Hello from A Quake 3 Refugee

Post by revok14 »

Hi chat. I played Quake 3 for over a decade, mostly insta-freeze tag. Trying to get some friends to play this awesome free game that isn't as movement-focused/hardcore.

Hi. Nice to see you. As you can see, UT99 is superior to Quake3 Arena - we have much more MAPS, SKINS, VOICEPACKS, MODS, WEAPONS, etc
So i wish you nice playing on UT99 servers... :tu:

Hi!
He's probably seeking refuge from autistic rage of Q3 gamers, because Quake 3 Arena is such an autistic game. :lol2:

Welcome revok14. I hope you get to love UT as much as we do.

Less of the superiority complex please ladies.
Quake 3 is and always was an awesome game and my chosen warmup before playing any competitive games of UT.
Once you get used to the faster pace of Q3, swapping over to UT makes it so you have more time to react and so you play a lot better.
Q3 is neither better or worse than UT. It is just different.

Watch you words Patrick. This forum is full of autistic UT players and I am one of them.

I'm not offended :P I made five whole CTF stock maps actually fun to play by speeding up the game by 35 pct, and adding AntiGrav and Instagib mutators.

[/color]But I digress. I've enjoyed the community-made mutators and appreciate the server hosting. I'm trying to recruit milennials and zoomers to play. This game will survive. Nobody is going to 'Hello World' into Q3 and have a good time, sadly.

Wait a second - That reminds me of me as well, I'd speed up the game like nearly 200%, remove switching times so it plays like Quake 1, added rocket jump, actually, all weapons make you jump with the kickback relic (I believe you gotta remove the code that prevents self inflict of relic effects), then a round event that enables Low Grav and lasts for a few minutes, then the plague comes in and it is full of spiders, but because it is in low grav, you can enough time to load up 6 rockets... And watch the giblets go a distance...
Now if this could be coded for UT99 that'd be a pleasure, for now a simple rapid-fire Quake 3 rocket launcher do, but a slower, 6-round rocket launcher sounds interesting in concept
Note that what you are reading are my ideas piling up 24/7 - I actually get to enjoy some parts of it in UT3 by installing 100 mutators and tweaking them for years & (this one in particular has been made available about a few instants ago like yesterday) & (both are up in my archive)

But it all comes to fast paced Quake like gameplay to me - I have yet to grow I believe, I am still young and with reflexes, snap that crosshair like absolutely everywhere for a whole 15 minutes non-stop, get me another drink so I can keep going! lol (it is a glass of water, I do not drink... )
My all time games & software are UT +mods & Smuggler's Run 2 by Rockstar; on the other side FFmpeg (CLI multimedia editor) & Zstandard (add-on for 7zip)
Aka RICOTTA_19216 / Loading SKAARJNET...

Welcome! Like yourself, I love Quake very much as well, but I think of Unreal as my “hometown”. On a side note, I am also autistic, but in this context, I personally do not take offense to it. Still, be careful of offending others.

Welcome to UT99 Community.
I never disliked Quake III. I played both games during the ‘war’ between them, and Quake III had its good points, such as its speed, the blood effects, which I thought were nicer, and the character-specific death sounds and voices, which I also really liked. It just lacked originality in the design of its simple objects and weapons compared to the madness of UT with its loaded rockets, flak and guided missiles, but above all, the cruel absence of excellent music...

TY for the welcome. These are all valid points. UT99 definitely wins in the visual aesthetics department. 'Phobos' as a stock map with a rotating skybox and heavenly audio crushes any of the q3 stock maps. Having a 'shock combo' option is a great counter to the highpoint camping that can tend to happen. And the flak cannon is also a great answer to corner corridor camping. I found a 'fast weapon switch' mutator which remedies probably my biggest criticism of the stock game. The other being that all of the stock CTF maps are essentially sniper matches due to their tremendous scale (Facing worlds is fun with low grav/instagib/35pct gamespeed increase.). Epicboy and Guantlet are good for small crowds. I'm currently playtesting a bunch of the 1on1 and 2on2 CTF maps. WIP.
