well that was a colossal waste of time

Post by EvilGrins »

I grabbed this the other day:
http://www.gamefront.com/files/3814721/utwinamp_zip

It's supposed to play mp3 files while you play Unreal Tournament but I was having no luck getting it to do anything. It basically just sat there:

The 'help' file that came with it, which basically said nothing whatsoever other than "this is what it is" without explaining how it was supposed to do it, was no good either. I finally had to do a google on it to find some direction. There was a forum for it on BeyondUnreal.com that explained the issue...

...you need WinAmp to run the bloody thing!

I don't have WinAmp, I use Sonique. An outdated, largely unavailable music player (unless you know where to look) that's got a guhzillion different skins.

Like this very appropriate one:

Don't suppose anybody knows of a reliable mp3 player I can use while playing games or, at the very least, an effective way to trick the UTwinAmp to work?

Do I actually need winamp? Can't I just setup the correct directories without installing it.

I like my current mp3 player better, have used winamp before.

It's made for WinAmp, you need WinAmp to make it work - plain and simple.

Because this is no Modification and not even a Mutator of UT I'll move this thread to Off-Topic.

Some things in life should be pretty obvious... and this is one of these things...

But you need something external to run it ...otherwise it is not working.
It's listed in the Mod list ...well, is this reason enough to let it stay in the modification area...?

Err, yeah the clue was in the title "winamp" being the lowest common denominator in all reference.
Winamp is easy to talk to, so lots of addons for other things over the years, have done it. Some "Window Blinds" themes even have winamp gadgets embedded in the desktop windows. There was even an addon for "Black & White" so your creature could dance to your music collection!

I used to use Sonique years ago, as I loved some of the skins (BTW.love the UT skin), but over time I've needed functionality over style, so opted for winamp as it can play oldschool MOD files (including Unreal UMX files), and I don't see any skin when I'm using a PC, as I minimise whatever the player to an icon in the task tray.
Winamp is also easily controlled by any standard multimedia keyboard. While i'm playing UT I use the keyboard media buttons.

There have been a couple of UT skins made, but I don't see the point as they limit winamp in its new form (The new "Bento" interface for winamp is going too far though, so I stick with "Modern" skin/interface
