there are 3 pro versions, SP1, SP2, SP3

if it doesnt match yours there is a high chance a repair install wont work (wont even give you that option during install)

These are not XP versions, just service pack levels. There are various editions (Pro, Home, Media Center, Tablet, 64-bit), but you most likely need Home Edition or Professional media. Look for untouched OEM images with SP3 slipstreamed that you can burn to disc.

I think since Microsoft was arrogant enough to announce 1 year ago that they would drop the support for XP within 2 years, they should provide it for free by now (at least the home edition).

I'll post a fix that works. I have to find it though. I wrote it up a long time ago (2007). And would you look at that. I found it already. Look at this post and find the section by me. Read it first. It does work and it basically is a work around for virtually any non-hardware problem your PC may have. Yeah, it is like snake oil but it actually works. Read what everyone else has said too. I haven't seen this error/virus in a long long time. Sorry I was late to respond if you already re-installed. Good luck:

Read it all first from page 1 to the end and then do it! I just read it again. I got tons of emails in the past thanking me for these directions. I even got another one about 4 months ago. It is the fix that keeps on fixing. LOL.Good luck!

XP was a good OS, very solid. I beat mine up pretty bad and it did well across the board. I think i like Win7 better though.

Nice find Herm, I'm going to read it myself after work.
So long, and thanks for all the fish

I like Win7 better too, it's by far much more secure, stable and has some neat features I am now using all the time.

I don't think it will, at least not fluently, it requires at least 1Gb for RAM, then throw in an AV and a few running programs...

yes but he asked "how many versions of PRO are there" that would sound to me like he has XP pro so the edition he has already stated.

if he tries to repair with SP3 disc and he has SP2 installed for example then it will NOT do a sys repair and will not give him that option to do so, he has to have the SP disc to match the install.

a repair install will not touch his system leaving his file system intact.

totally agree there, once you get used to 7 you will prefer it but its a nightmare to get used to when you are so used to XP, totally different user interface.

It is possible, you can pretty much turn off almost everything to look like windows 98 or 95 or even older versions afaik.

OK, I found a XP disk, and now I'll re-install my Windows (yes, i know that I'll lose all my files) but 1 question... it says that it needs to format the partition, so my question is, which file system should I use, NTFS or FAT?
Quick reply please... :help:

NTFS... but why didn't you try to save/check your system with a live-CD??
Well, for you maybe it's the best to reinstall the complete stuff.
