Godzilla 2014
I've been a fan of Godzilla almost longer than I could talk; parents had it on television without paying attention and I crawled over and was fixated. Saw the badly dubbed Godzilla films of the 70's, the much better subtitled ones in the late 90's, and all the others ones here and there.
This new one?

Wow.
Other than Godzilla, there's 5 other monsters in this trailer (technically 4 but I'm counting the eggs as 1 monster). I've only identified 2 others.
Gigan · http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigan
Rodan · http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rodan
This movie is going to rock my socks!
Anybody else as excited as I am?

I kinda thought that might've been what they shot flares up at near the center of the trailer, but couldn't tell for sure.

Re: Godzilla 2014
Some monsters have more than one name, which is why Godzilla was originally Gojira.
Anywho, don't think I saw that one.

Re: Godzilla 2014
You know why they made those movies ?
After we nuked Japan, they still wanted a way to show of some superiority for the general public, so they made Godzilla type movies. Radiation then a huge ominous monster was created.

Re: Godzilla 2014
May explain why in the late 70's they stopped showing Godzilla films on American TV as much. Long before cable existed (I'm so old) the rumor was that American media was uncomfortable with so many kids having a large Japanese character as their hero.
Obviously this was before the Anime popularity explosion.

Re: Godzilla 2014
Gojira was not invented as a hero. Gojira was the Earth's retribution on mankind, for it's miss-use of science.
The Gojira films may have been stopped playing more likely because they realised they were politically loaded, anti-atomic films.
Gojira was the result of the directors horror at the tragedies of Nagasaki and Hiroshima.
Perhaps some in the the U.S. did not like the people being reminded what it did.
I would imagine that the films and documentaries about that grim chapter of WW2 do not get played on U.S. TV either.
Later Gojira films lost much of the politics and point, as he became the saviour of mankind instead of the destroyer.
The modern Godzilla film almost went back to the roots, but still just tuned into a remake of king Kong.
I feel that Cloverfield is the most natural successor to the original Gojira film.

I loved watching the Godzilla Stompathon on Scifi when I was younger. The monsters that Godzilla will be fighting are new, so Mothra, Gigan, and Rodan won't be appearing. Can't wait to see it!

Then why are Gigan and Rodan in the trailer?AlCapowned wrote:The monsters that Godzilla will be fighting are new, so Mothra, Gigan, and Rodan won't be appearing. Can't wait to see it!
Scene where a soldier is shooting straight up from a ship, large dino-bird like thing swooping down at him? That's Rodan. Also scene of one of San Francisco's MUNI's getting bitten in half by a large beak.
Near the middle of the trailer, right after we hear Godzilla roar, a giant hooked claw smals into the ground. That's Gigan.
I understand the MOTU concept for the other creatures, but a lot of them are based on classic Godzilla beasties. In the teaser trailer, that got quickly pulled from the internet, there's a scene with a massive egg split open and inside you can partially see a long ginormous body with multiple limbs.
The buzz online was that was one of the Mothra caterpillars.

Re: Godzilla 2014
They aren't. Just because the monsters have slight similarities to some of the old ones doesn't mean they're the same monsters. Then why are Gigan and Rodan in the trailer?
Spoiler
An early draft of the script has been leaked, and it only includes the MUTO monsters (one of which can fly). I haven't read it myself, but I've seen summaries, and they've stated that the MUTOs are new. The MUTOs are insect-like creatures that use nuclear reactors to incubate their eggs, and that's why they go after Godzilla - he's the perfect host. The centipede-like creature in the teaser trailer isn't mentioned, so it could very well just be a promotional monster (it's a shame if so, because it looked awesome). There's no room in the story for Rodan, let alone an alien like Gigan. Besides, Legendary Pictures doesn't have the rights to any Toho monster other than Godzilla, so they had to make their own instead of paying for the rights to older monsters.

Re: Godzilla 2014
I remain convinced it's them.
That's like saying "we don't own the rights to the X-Men... but we're making a movie with a guy with metal bones and claws, a guy that shoots things with his eyes, and a redhead that can do amazing things with her brain. Not X-Men though"
Some have used such excuses in the past, I didn't buy it then or now.
They don't need to have Gigan's or Rodan's extensive history included to make virtually identical monsters, modernized with better special effects, and just heap them in with the other MOTUs in the film created the same way all the others were. They don't even have to name them.

Re: Godzilla 2014
By that logic, the Flash is a mutant. He has super speed, so he's the same as Quicksilver.
You can base your entire assumption on a passing resemblance to some of Toho's original monsters and ignore everything else, but that pretty much means that no matter what, you can say the monsters are whatever you want them to be. Just don't be surprised when the movie proves you wrong.
