The Future of Unreal Tournament Begins Today.

Work on the future of Unreal Tournament begins today, and we’re happy to announce that we’re going to do this together, with you. We know that fans of the game are as passionate about Unreal Tournament as we are. We know that you have great ideas and strong opinions about where the game should go and what it should be. So let’s do something radical and make this game together, in the open, and for all of us.

Here’s the plan:

• We’ve created a small team of UT veterans that are beginning work on the project starting today.
• From the very first line of code, the very first art created and design decision made, development will happen in the open, as a collaboration between Epic, UT fans and UE4 developers. We’ll be using forums for discussion, and Twitch streams for regular updates.
• If you are a fan and you want to participate, create a free account and join the forum discussion.
• All code and content will be available live to UE4 developers on GitHub.
• The game will be true to its roots as a competitive FPS.
• Development will be focused on Windows, Mac and Linux.

So what’s the catch?

• It will take many months until the game is playable by gamers. This is real development from scratch.
• When the game is playable, it will be free. Not free to play, just free.
• We’ll eventually create a marketplace where developers, modders, artists and gamers can give away, buy and sell mods and content. Earnings from the marketplace will be split between the mod/content developer, and Epic. That’s how we plan to pay for the game.

A lot of this is brand new for Epic, and we don’t yet have everything figured out. Things will probably definitely go wrong from time to time, and when they do, we’ll have to work through them together. There will be a lot of tough decisions to make, and not every feature will make it into the game. But if you’re a fan of Unreal Tournament, a UE4 developer, or a future modder – or if you just want to learn how we make games – we hope you’ll join us. It’s going to be fun.

Want to get involved?

• Want more detail on the project? Read our wiki.
• Want to participate & give feedback? These forums are the place to do it. Sign up for a free account here to join Unreal Engine 4 community.
• Just interested in getting updates? Subscribe to our newsletter.
• In case you want to check out the classic Unreal Tournament games, we’ve put them on sale on Steam.

I honestly don't care. I wish them good luck, but even if the game is entirely made by the old guard and the most hardcore veterans, I don't see a reason for a new Unreal Tournament.
Besides, the age of the quick map-making by one guy in a week is done, and that was the great strength of FPSs back in the Unreal glory days.

For this and for many reasons, I think Unreal and UT are mostly games which were very well adapted to their time, but should have remained there. Of course, that's just the grumpy old "back-in-my-days" guy in me talking. I might pick this one up by curiosity though, it just won't be in the same state of mind.

At least, UT is still rocking, that's always good. I hope the new interest in it will bring us U/UT/UT2 guys some new people looking for what it was in its prime :)
You must construct additional pylons.

wow, awesome news but...
...I'm curious to understand if this project will someway be a back to the roots or simply another update with a new game engine like UT3 :what:

I wonder if modding for this new game will require the monthly fee on the engine?
That would be a disaster.

As of right now its a monthly subscription to use the license to create content for UE4. The keywords are UE4 though. It's the core part of their business model with the game. It is how they will make some cash in development while providing a free game. How it will be after a stable release, I do not know. I sure hope not... if anything a separate editor for the Unreal Tournament game.

Well in terms of licensing I think that its affordable and a step in the right direction.

- for $20 month ($240 annually) + %5 royalities

You get the full UnrealEngine4 Engine plus sources including c++ etc.

From here you can build practically anything concievable from games to 3d architecture and design systems.

Advanced physics based games and more.

Perhaps for UT4 game itself ... will be cheaper still.

The $20 month peobably couldn't be exchanged for %10 royalities because most devs will probably release free.
However you also only need to pay as you go (assumably).. therefore allowing small bursts or 12 months to complete
Project...

However... you could rebuild siege into it.. man imagine the things you can do..

Once done you can actually sell the mod ^ if you wanted to... to server hosters.

Essentually what Epic is doing .. is allowing us to use their engine.. to develop anything we want..
And be paid for our work... in the process.

A wise man once said

"Turn your Hobby... into your Job,
And Play all Day!"

^ What better way todo this... then now with this Engine.

But in your job you get money and doesn't have to pay to be able to work.
