Time for a moment of culture...

Post by JackGriffin »

I learned something interesting today and I thought I'd share it. We all say "Unreal"-this and "Unreal"-that but do you know who was the creator of the word Unreal itself and was the very first person to write it down? Don't google, really try to guess before peeking. I'll bet you are surprised. :tu:
Spoiler
Believe it or not the first person to use the word "Unreal" was none other than Shakespeare himself! It was used in the play Macbeth:
"Hence horrible shadow, Vnreall mock'ry hence." ["Macbeth," III.iv.107]
Used by permission from Shakespeare himself. Really!

well, I still have a Commodore Amiga 500 at home (fully working !) and I've this game ! :o
Unreal by Epic Games goes far beyond this old 2D game but I must say some game soundtracks, like this, are really amazing, most of all if you think these old games were saved on 700kb floppy disk, a kind of "digital archeology" many of you probably don't know. I still can listen to these OSTs (Lotus, Chambers of Shaolin, Turrican II and many others) by using DeliPlayer, an old music player suitable for tracker modules.

listen to this ! :tu:

Flay, who is a true Amiga freak, does know for sure much about it...

Wonderful post Jack :D
I made myself not look and ask myself "Who would make words an un-version of the original ?"
Only 1 person lept to my mind, as "Bill the Quill" Shakespeare is responsible for so many of our common but odd words.
He would use "un" on many words to show the reverse.

No surprise, this Amiga-freak has Unreal for the Amiga
I have the version packaged for the "Amiga in a box" distro. Due to the fluctuating availability of the downloads, I collected some archive links, to supplement the current site.

I have uploaded all my AIAB files, and you can find the version prepared by Jaybee in the "Extras folder"

If you already have WHDLoad setup as your HD game loader, then you may prefer
http://www.whdload.de/games/Unreal.html

I actually thought about mentioning this game in the past, but didn't think anyone would be interested, but I tend to forget a lot of us are old..err..experienced geeks, who remember "the before-time" when computing was fresh, and ideas on GUI layout had not yet started to solidify.
3D packages of yester-year certainly were.. varied and ...interesting to operate !
Many Amiga products still exists and have done rather well for themselves.
Perhaps you heard of "Lightwave" or "Cinema 4D" ? ;)
These 2 are still heavily used in the film industry,

Ahhh, when God games were God games.
It made more sense to influence the environment and people, but now they are just pure resource management.
The first Black & White was he only PC God game I felt that kept that simplicity.

Not sure why, but today has been an odd Amiga revival day.
The BeyondUnreal IRC has been full of people posting old soundtracks and games.
Maybe there is something nerdy in the water ?

Maybe relax a bit paper? This is about as 'general discussion' as you can get plus it's interesting...

BTW:
"Knock knock"...
"Who's there?"
Spoiler
Also first penned by Shakespeare (Macbeth, Act2-Scene3)
That's enough for your culture moment. Now back to pron and slaying each other in Unreal-land you lot!
So long, and thanks for all the fish

Interesting concept.

And I couldn't guess the release date because I've never seen it. I think I heard the name here and there... but nothing more.

BTW. it all got oddly Shakespeare-shaped in the Beyond Unreal IRC yesterday.
We were coming up with Ye Olde English UT voice pack ideas.

"Foul varlet thou hast taken your last flag"
"Curses upon you, for thou hast blown mine legs to hell !"
