Userpics · Icons · Avatars

Post by EvilGrins »

There's people on this forum that don't have an avatar for their account, and that's their choice... but it bothers me. I don't know why, it just does.

So, in my more active livejournal days I ran a community called Weirdfolks. Going back several years, and maybe a million userpics/icons, I used to do "Icon Dumps" there.

Some of which involved not entirely work safe content, but mostly harlmess fun stuff... and more than a tad insane.

This kinda stuff:

Here's the 1st most recent page · http://tinyurl.com/358bzqc · if anyone wants to maybe pick something for here.

Give each page time to load, there's easily over 100 icons per.

Some people prefer NOT to use an avatar ...and some disable them entirely in there User Control Panel.
As long as the Names are visible. :noidea I don't care.

Some people are .... mysterious !
and others have no imagination.
I keep a similar collection for my own use, but these days I tend to make my own so they are unique.

yours do tend to reflect you quite well, as your choices are honest :D
I like to think mine are true to my nature

:tu: ...I have only three other avatar pictures and many variants of the good old lunatic coffee addict.

This is the avatar I use at Smack Jeeves...

I think they clutter things up too much. I've mentioned a couple of times to the phpBB devs that they should institute code that displays the first post in a thread by someone so it contains their avatar, sig, etc but all subsequent posts in that thread that they add will skip displaying them. Too many times forums look like MySPace and it's work to scroll four screens to find the nuggets of posting you are looking for. Generally I just never go back when I run into those. I have minimalist tendencies though so grade me on a curve.

Got mine since beginning. Selfmade, simple, unspectacular. Won't change it to the end.

For me is an avatar like a face of this particular person ...I recognize them faster.
And it throws me off when ever the avatar is changed.

@ Jack
That's the reason why we don't want to have toooo flashy (and big) signatures and avatars.

Yeah, and it's greatly appreciated that you limit them. Yours for instance is about as big as should be allowed.

I notice some of the new style sites aimed at use on mobile devices and tablets allow huge avatars and sigs.
Crazy way to make sites if you ask me.
Give people a smaller screen and present less info at a time ? :omfg:

Thankfully here there are sensible limits we politely encourage, whereas at Beyond Unreal I make good use of Opera content blocker :D

BTW. For those that use avatars attached to various services, Gravatar can be convenient.
You can see the full size version of my current avatar http://gravatar.com/drflay
I keep meaning to do a new one with a bottle of rum and without the coke machine

Some of mine are logos for the music side of my life, and again all hand made
The Artist "Dr.Flay" needed a recognisable logo, that could be re-used

and so did the music label "Fishy Business".

I chose the seagoat because it looks like possibly the stupidest animal ever imagined. A wall-eyed bonehead.

Anyhow, I'm not much for animated avatars; they bother me intensely.

Some may've noticed I've changed my icon for November.

I got it from this old thing · http://weirdfolks.livejournal.com/1846195.html · if anyone else want to do it for the month too.
