WinXP hack resurrects patches for retired OS

Post by UTPe »

hello,
a friend of mine sent me yesterday an interesting link:

Windows XP hack resurrects patches for retired OS
http://www.computerworld.com/article/24 ... ed-os.html

This article was published on May 28, 2014 but I never heard about it. Anyway, I installed the hack and this morning, after starting WinXP, the system has showed me some available updates (see image attached). I installed these updates and, as written in the article, all went fine, no problems or system crashes.
If you still use WinXP SP3 on old machines, with this method you can get security updates until 2019.

cheers,
Pietro

Very Cool!
But does this hack guarantee the Security Updates would be safe??

well, as written in the article, WinXP SP3 and Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 share the same core system so security updates for POSReady 2009 are valid for both (no problems or system crashes have been reported after applying these updates to WinXP SP3): the hack is simply a registry value which "says" to Windows Update service that your WinXP SP3 is a Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 which can be updated
anyway, not all WinXP SP3 components are updated, only system security updates are available (for example, IE8 can't be updated so it's better to use another browser)

NOTE: This is not really a "hack", it is simply a Windows "tweak".

I was hoping the Autopatcher team would add this to their updater, but they refused to support the embedded version.

I thought patch this was common knowledge, so my apologies for not mentioning it before.
Everyone has been expecting MS to fix this fix, and every patch-tuesday to be the last, but it seems MS have decided to not make a fuss.

Yes this patch is "suitable" for all XPs.
Windows updates available for things you don't need can already be installed without a problem, but remember that even updates you do need, can clash with updates you already have :(
(Windows 7 had this problem in the last 2 updates).

You will now be offered updates for security issues with things you don't have (like a credit-card reader, or cash register). It won't harm windows, but it will take more space.

I should point out that many people get wrapped up in the security issues of Windows components, but ignore all the other software equally able to punch a massive hole in your security.
You can give yourself a complete (and free) security audit with Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI)
