Keyboard and mouse (and sound) problem

Post by FRONK »

Alright, I've tried for a whole day to fix this, looked everywhere (I hope) for a solution and I couldn't find one. This is my last resort, hoping anyone here has encountered this before and knows the solution.

The mouse and keyboard work perfectly in the menu but when I start actually playing, both the keyboard and the mouse input stop responding. The only things that still work are typical windows functions like alt-tabbing, ctrl-alt-delete and whatnot. Sometimes, right when I get in the game, it'll work for 1-3 seconds before it just stops again. I also noticed that if that happens, when it stops, my gun model disappears. This is probably just a mouse and keyboard problem as I've tried plugging in a controller and it actually works :noidea (I also tried using another keyboard/mouse and it does the same thing)

The other problem I have with this game is the sound. Now I managed to make the sound work by using another audio device (OpenAL and FMOD both work). This isn't an ideal solution as the sound for both of those devices is a bit unusual.

When I try using the galaxy device, the game crashes before even reaching the loading screen for the intro. Just wondering if there's a fix for that. I don't mind as much though and fixing my first problem is much more important.

Well, a good starting point would be to check the log. Is the game fully patched? Single-core affinity done? DX updated? Are you running D3D or OGL? Graphics drivers up to date? Sound drivers? Did you install all of the files for your mainboard? Did your mouse and keyboard come with software that might be conflicting (if you installed it)?

What about other games? Any problems?

Try deleting the UnrealTournament.ini file or try copy and pasting some of the .ini file settings that can be found in the tweaking thread here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=373

I have a similar setup.
To install from the CD, I ran the installer with compatibility mode set to XP.
Some Win7+ users have had random install problems.
IMPORTANT: While installing UT99, it records the current CPU speed. You MUST lock your CPU at max speed during installation to avoid variable game speed.

I have "Direct Input" off. Enabling it makes the keyboard and mouse lag.

Realtek do not include OpenAL support since Vista. You need to use Realtek "3D Sound Back" to add OpenAL support for individual games and programs.
This must be run in compatibility made as Vista SP1

I find the SwFmod audio renderer is more reliable on my ASRock with Realtek.
If you got the most recent version of the OMP it should have this newer renderer in it. If not then get the beta version from the bottom of the list

You can also access the UT config via the "Advanced Options" window in UEd. This can be quicker and help see all the settings.

Game is fully patched, I've tried single-core affinity, DX is as up to date. I'm running OGL, updated my graphics drivers. The files are on my main drive (C:\Unreal Tournament GOTY). Only my mouse has software but I tried with another mouse that doesn't and closing said software and it's all the same. Where do I check the logs?

I didn't install the game through the original installer, I have the GOG version and as far as I can tell the files were simply unpacked to whichever location you chose
Funnily enough Direct Input is the only way the mouse will actually work but it's really really really bad and wonky. Keyboard still won't work though.
I had the game on OpenAL and I didn't notice many differences compared to FMOD, I switched it to FMOD though just in case.
UEd crashes on startup with a general protection fault :???:

Try the SwFmod renderer in OMP0.99b-UT436-UT451. Sorry there is no Wiki page for the SwFmod yet, but it is designed to be the most compatible.

Ah yes, If GOG installs the game folder as "Unreal Tournament" rather than "UnrealTournament", that will break UEd :(
My preference is to have 1 install for gaming and adding mods and hi-res textures to, and another for editing. There is a handy standalone version of UEd2 with extras.

UnrealEditorv21Setup.exe
UnrealEditorv21Setup.exe.torrent
(23.17 KiB) Downloaded 53 times
Having them separate means you can also use the v451b patch if you want http://www.utpg.org (use before OMP)
You can add the folders to each installation in the main UT ini files. This saves duplicating files.

So, just to be clear, you didn't install the game, right? I understand it unzips to a particular location you choose, but is there no 'setup.exe' anywhere in the system folder? I looked on gog and they have your particular issue listed (I assume you have seen that) and they do say to try "installing the game to...", which implies it does need to be actually installed.

Not having installed the game might explain why it isn't playing well - or perhaps recognizing - your mouse and keyboard. Many games just unzip and play, but I am not sure this is one of them.

The installer they are referring to in that link is the GOG installer, because as far as I know that is what all GOG games use. I've tried everything it says in there to no avail
