Facing problem in hosting

Post by ar1tra »

I used to host UT games and played with my friends. I have a router and use port forwarding to host and it was perfectly working. My public ip used to be like 193.168.x.x. But from last few days my public ip is like 202.78.x.x. And nobody can join the game.. Are there any fix of that?
Note: Sometimes I noticed that my public ip automatically changed.
Please help....

Wrong section ...this part of the forum is for "Suggestion, Criticism, Questions" about our forum. ;)
I'll move your thread to "Servers".

Moved.

Tell your ISP to give you a static IP if you can... and if you are willing to keep that or not. Because they gave you a dynamic IP and it will change.

So your friends have added your server as a "Favorite"? If you can't organise a static IP with your ISP, then you'll have the same problem every time your IP lease expires or your router drops your connection and re-connects. There is a way around this using "Open Location" (right click in the server browser), but it's not as easy. You can use a host redirect service -> you choose a domain name, and point this to your home IP address, and then your friends can use the domain name to connect to your server instead of the IP. When your IP changes, you update the redirect service. When I was hosting a server from home, I used noip for this.

1) Basically, you create a free (or paid for) account at: https://www.noip.com

2) Log in, click on "Add a Host"

3) Fill in the Hostname fields - something like below (choose any name you like - I put 'myutserver' here, for example), and then select one of the available domain names (I chose workisboring.com)

Image

4) Click "Add Host"

That's it. Now when people want to connect to your server, they would use "Open Location" and enter - for example - myutserver.workisboring.com

Don't worry about the confusion :D

"Shai hulud" - this is a bit self-indulgent of me, but since you asked I'll explain :P I started playing the "demo" version of UT somewhere around the summer of 2000. I didn't "graduate" to the retail (or "full" version of the game, as we referred to it on the demo) until late 2006 or early 2007. But when I did, I decided to pick a new name. At the time I was reading the "Dune" series of Sci-Fi books by Frank Herbert. "Shai hulud" is the name of a sort of living god creature from those novels. Pretentious, I know, but I suppose I thought it sounded fairly unique (in the UT world) at the time. I hadn't planned to keep using it, but it stuck. Generally the "hulud" part is dropped nowadays, and I just go by "Shai" - which I've grown rather used to!
