Come on people, why so symetric! D:

I'm saving this. You can be damn sure I'll be reusing it whenever I see a symmetric DM map.

@Hellkeeper I was thinking of doing a completely asymmetrical CTF next :)

CTF is the only gametype where symmetry is always good, and usually even required. It's so hard to balance an assymetric CTF... EternalCave is a one in a million. Asymmetric CTF is a feat when it's done right!

For any other gametype though. I find it a bit lazy, and it means less good ideas and less varied situations in the map. I have made symmetric DM maps when I was learning the editor, but I haven't made one in ages because it's just not as good. A good evidence of that is that I can't think of an insanely popular DM map that is Symmetric, except for "arena" maps such as morbias.

Domination is a gray area because it's a weird gametype which can work very well with symmetry. Generally though, I'd still go with a map without it because it means each point has a completely different working. Think DOM-Cinder for instance. It also doesn't mean no symmetry at all, usually a CP room works well when it's symmetric in an asymmetric map; think DOM-FoT-ShaderX.

interesting opin there HK .. now go make us a CTF will ya !!!!

Of course any space ship DM or boat/ship is pretty much symetrical... i think you can find many of those, and sometimes they are a nice change in the mix. you know it occurs to me that Arcane temple is actually a symetrical DM - actually, most of it - only the "front" doorway, sniperpost/waterfall area and little outside terrain redeemer pool area are non-symetrical.

I think a bigger *sin* in DM design is RCR and lack of z-axis fighting in general ... well designed DM can also work for DOM and vice-versa :)

I'm actually starting to think about DM ideas - Tom_caT's cookin' up a nice little beauty as we speak, nicely polished and lots of Z-axis so naturally I have to compete now, lol :D

Cheers

My map will be a mover hell hole ...but ...the layout is not entirely done ...because it's an ever moving/changing map.
And I don't know how bots will handle this kind of map :?
I hope it will play great afterwards.

Tss, I made a map, I'm not planning on making any others.

Very true, and I did not say that "symmetric" equals "bad", there are very good symmetric DMs (Hyperblast). It's just that with equal skill on the mapper's part, assymetry beats symmetry. As for ArcaneTemple... It's "meh" at best.
I think a bigger *sin* in DM design is RCR and lack of z-axis fighting in general ... well designed DM can also work for DOM and vice-versa :)
In most cases, a well-designed DM map will work perfectly in DOM because they are both very cyclical gametypes. DOM maps usually work very well in DM too, but there are cases in which a DOM map makes a bad DM one: Condemned is a nice example; I guess that it's because some DOM map are be more "circular", while a DM map has to be fully non-linear.

RCR is bad because it is completely linear and thus makes the game predictible, boring and severly limits the number of situations you can be in on a given map. I didn't mention it because it seems most of us here are good enough to not fall into this trap :)

Aloha,

here is my very first shared UT99 Map:

The Bot Pathing is really shitty because i never did that before.

at the end the 512K limit was a bit of Horror for me :)
