Can't a mod add new bots to a match at a whim?
Like I suggested in my post, just have the mutator add an extra bot into the match for any player that is staying in spectator mode, and then remove said bot if/when the player joins the match. It doesn't keep the spectating player out of the roster, but it has the same result for the gameplay.

I mean there's a console command that can do that, and granted it is a little tricky to use that in LAN game but I understand it is still possible. I have a hard time imagining a mutator couldn't do that.

Hello, I know this mod hasn't seen much attention for almost a decade now, but I'm hoping I could get some troubleshooting with it.

I used to use this mod for when I set up games at a convention; it was great because it could drop a bot into and out of a game when no one was using that particular computer, rather than having a player just sitting in the match doing nothing. And when it's in spectator mode, there is even text displayed on the screen to tell people that it's free play and they can just join right in! Absolutely perfect for that kind of setting where people come and go as they please.

Well, the convention I used to do this for didn't survive the pandemic, but I've found another one that I'm going to be doing the same set-up with. However, I've had to replace the computer I was using as a server. And with this new server, something is wrong and the clients no longer see the custom text displayed on the screen. Something has changed in the settings, but I can't find what.

The "Free Play" text (Banner text in the config file) still appears on the host's screen, if I don't run the host as a dedicated server. But it doesn't show on any of the clients. The clients are using the same rigs as before, they haven't changed. But I can't find what setting I have to tweak on the host to get the text to appear now.

I have tried tweaking my server settings but to no avail. I can't find any other settings in the config file that do anything about this.
Any help would be appreciated.

Ow, Damn... I might not have been the one to bump this, but this was how I found out about his passing. He will be missed. :sad2:

Even if he is dead, that doesn't mean that there is no one else that might know what the problem is.

It's really weird that a mod would stop working when the game software itself hasn't changed.

I had a look at the code of SpecStart-v3.0 (given on first page) and there is nothing to add a bot or to display text except this:

SpecStart enabled.  Hit AltFire to Exit.
Inventory Use Enabled.
Hop Thru Mode enabled.  Hit Fire For SpecStart Mode or AltFire to join game.
what is displayed via ClientMessage when player joins.

Probably you have used a special version or another mod. :noidea
