Installing win 7
Installing win 7
I have win7 on my old hard drive.
I put win 10 on my second hard drive. newer drive and has the installs for games and things.
Is there a way, without messing with hard drive cables, to just make my new D drive (that I want to be C, but., the new boot drive.
I guess what I am saying also is, what can I delete or edit so it won't find win10. I am just getting paranoid my original drive is getting old.
Really hate to lose my program links, and don't want to wipe the drive either .I know, I know, it's impossible, but maybe I can just keep a few games intact or fix later.
It's setup for multiboot right now, so I have to get rid of it finding win10. I know if I try it will just say "you have a newer version"

Re: Installing win 7
I have not understood what your aim is: Do you want to run Win7 again? Or do you want to change the letter of the system partition in Win10 from "D:" to "C:"? Sharing a screenshot of the "Disk Management" (run "diskmgmt.msc") would help to see what the current state is.

Re: Installing win 7
If you installed Win 10 to the second drive, with the old drive as C: then the boot info for 10 is on the old drive.
You need a boot manager if you swap the drive order (do it in the BIOS)
I use System Commander, but it is not free.
Try Super Grub 2

Re: Installing win 7
Ahh, BIOS, now that I didn't think of.
In my worst case scenario I will just lose links to games, and or forced to reinstall and save my game positions.
Not only the old hard drive, but a new install of windows is needed. been a while now.
@Barbie, No I want to do a install of windows 7 on a drive that has win 10 on it.
windows blocks installs if you have a "newer version" but it is tied to my booting, I can select win10 or win 7, the new drive has win10
If I boot into win 10, it forces my C drive with win 7, old drive, to become another drive letter. and makes it win 10 ,,C.
My aim is to not have to mess with hard drive cable switching, but install win 7 on the "other" drive.
should be possible with SATA since there is really no "primary" drive anymore. The plugs don't matter that much like it used to.
but I know it will mess up some programs, there is really only 3 or 4 things I wish could stay. but once I change the letter,
I could copy everything from my D now to the old drive, I have enough space, be my first step.I just know this older drive is going to get funky sooner or later. and I don't want to be stuck with win10 or wiping the drive. if my now C drive fails.

Re: Installing win 7
Previous versions of Windows looked for a valid Windows to upgrade, Windows 10 does not need this.
It is tied to the hardware you accepted it on, so you can disable or remove the Win7 drive during installation.
Windows is becoming less and less friendly with multibooting, so alternative boot managers are a must-have.
The "Ultimate Boot CD" has a variety you can try, and you should all have this disc in your tool kit.

Re: Installing win 7
You can make another partition from within the c drive let say drive d:\.
And then install windows 10 on that drive and nothing is lost.

Re: Installing win 7
The issue isn't losing anything, other than losing the multiboot ability and prefered drive order.
If you install Windows to the second partition, the boot block is still in the first active partition, so if you wipe C: Bye-bye bootup, and you have to reinstall something like Grub.

Aftre installing windows 10 you get a message screen to boot with windows 7 or windows 10.Dr.Flay wrote:If you installed Win 10 to the second drive, with the old drive as C: then the boot info for 10 is on the old drive.

Even within windows you can delete a boot partition within windows 7 and 10.
Thats for when you dont wanna have to boot the both os es.
hope this helps.you can edit in cmd systemtools and you can deside what you wanna do with a sertin windows configuration.
if you wanna have one windows installed you can delete with the command sysdm.cpl.
bytheway you can use the environment variables and chance the settings.
be very carefull what your doing here you can delete a whole windows configuration withing seconds.
You windows will not boot when that list is empty.
If you have 2 oses installed there will be 2 windows path,s on that list.
Make a backup from your Original windows harddisk (boot from dvd or cd)
Then use your new drive install evrything and make a recovery from your backup.

May I ask how many systems you have set up with multi boot already?rjmno1 wrote:...

Re: Installing win 7
Yes I want to get rid of win10 in the multiboot first. Using official windows way of doing it, forgot or not sure where to look, MsConfig ? I will find it I know it's there .
Then I will just delete the windows directory, and other stuff of win 10 on my drive D
Then install win7 on D.
Switch drives in BIOS to make D to C, Really this part is confusing. wasn't planning on doing any backup, if I can just move the stuff to C now, and call it D later, sort of plan, but I am not sure.
If I could setup from C running win7, install on D win 7 (like I did 10) then trash C win7 afterwards.
I think I will be forced to pull a drive cable. so C will be the only drive, but I would have to copy all of over to C first, once I unplug it, setup 7, when I plug back in it will turn into my D, keeping my setups, (to a point. aaaaargh I know things will get messed up.

You just have to install windows on a diferent drive.Barbie wrote:May I ask how many systems you have set up with multi boot already?rjmno1 wrote:...

Windows makes to you a choise to boot from windows 7 or 10,remember to first install windows 7 then 10.
Set your eufi bios not to gpt , otherwise the trick doesn't work.
Just the good old ntfs file system will do the trick, cause your running windows 7 in the first place otherwise the compatbility will not work with gpt file system on windows 8 and 10.
You must first at all chance the settings of the bios to ntfs before continu and save the bios.
It all depens wich bios version you do have. And wich brand.
Just like redfist post msconfig will do the trick for you BUT BE CAREFULL YOU CAN DELETE THE WRONG WINDOWS VERSION.
Hope this helps.

Re: Installing win 7
I think you are getting confused, I have both win 10 and 7.
I want to replace win 10 that is on my newer hard drive. with win7.
and delete win7 on my old hard drive.

Re: Installing win 7
so your stuff is on the win7 drive right?
so you have to format the new drive where windows 10 comes on.
wich you can do while installing windows 10
You have to install the other drive as your win7 as sata drive number 2 copy the files and you are done right?
Well thats not so dififcult. How big is the amount of data you must copy for keeps?
Its very simple install win 10 on new drive copy the files from the win 7 drive to 10 when the install is finished of the windows 10 drive.
You can use the both drives on your computer.

Re: Installing win 7
Alot of people are using windows 7 still yet.Red_Fist wrote:No, I am trashing win 10 I don't use it, bag of bolts.
They dont like windows 10 becouse the settings are all hidden, and very dificult to find.
I think there are more windows 7 users then 10.
I,m personaly use windows 10 ,and getting use to it.
And it comes with direct x 12 within the win 10 package.
Just make a new install from windows 7 without formatting the drive.
The existing windows version will be copied in the windows old map.
Your files on the harddrive will not be deleted.
