Found this interesting watch the other day that explains how BSP works. Always wondered how it actually works and how it renders stuff. Of course it had to be Carmack.

Thanks Swanky for finding this video, BSP is great and John Carmack is a genius for using BSP in Doom, so many games use BSP including UT99 so the legacy of Doom still lives on today, also the video mentions that since almost every game used BSP in the late 90's and early 2000's, levels had a distinctive look to them (very cubic shapes for the most part) and I actually prefer that look rather than the more complex shapes we have today, they may look prettier but it's more heavy on the eyes, sometimes less is more :D

Can you timecode the video to the point where BSP starts bro?

Right-click > copy from time

You watch or you don't as pretty much the whole video is about it and what made it necessary in the first place.

@Aspide - I agree. There's a certain elegance to it, and it's easy to follow.

Nice find thank you for sharing. A shame there is no references to BSP in the the unreal engine is this because it is different or did epic just copycat it if you know? A lot of memories in that youtube video lot of good old classics where all good gameplay was invented.

I think it's mostly because most other games were more influential. Quake had 6 dimensions of freedom before Unreal did, Unreal just did it particularly pretty back in '98, and both Half-Life and Halo revolutionized the genre more with their storytelling and later capability for console gaming.

Smeer Kat's digression into BSP in his UT tutorial on Semisolids is a helpful overview too (timestamped):
