UT99 on Raspberry Pi experience?

Post by caver01 »

Hi folks! I was wondering if anyone has any first-hand experience running UT99 on a Raspberry Pi (native, not x86 emulation). With recent builds supporting ARM64 now, I was curious if anyone has done the Linux setup on this hardware and can share their experience.

I have a few different models running various things in the house (I don't have a Pi 5--yet) and I thought it might be an interesting project to build a cute little UT99 portable workstation. Or, since I have several Pis rack-mounted for home automation, cameras etc, if FPS/playability is not great, maybe one of these can run in dedicated server mode. Can a Pi 3 pull it off? What about a Pi Zero or Zero2? Or, maybe a Pi 4 is minimum usability. Please share your thoughts/experience. Thanks!

It was playable when I tried a very early version a year or so ago(didn't really test online), could get ~ 40-60fps 1080p on low settings. This was on a PI4 4GB, performance was better when I overclocked the CPU.

It works on the PI4 with the only playable renderer being OpenGLDrv.
I recommend disabling Detail Textures, and for a consistent >60fps on high detail mode to run at no higher than 1024x768
