My UnrealTournament.exe keeps deleting

Post by EvilGrins »

At least, it was last night. First time I thought I might've deleted it myself, the shortcut on my desktop had stopped working and when I went to check the file itself... it was gone.

There was some initial panic, maybe some screaming, and then I went about restoring. It wasn't in the Recycle Bin, so I got creative.

Directory for the one I play from nowadays is this · D:\Unreal Anthology\UnrealTournament

However, unlike some who get disenfranchised from the game and uninstalled it, my original install is this · D:\UnrealTournament

Reason I have both of them is when Unreal Anthology came out, I wasn't sure if it would be the exact same as the original. So I installed it without getting rid of the original. Which is a good thing as despite the whole "anthology" bit, the .exe file for UT is the same in both.

Merely copied the .exe from one directory to another and it worked fine...

...but then, about 25 minutes later, it deleted again.

Ran multiple anti-virus scans on my system, malware scans too... Nada!

All told it happened about 5 times last night over several hours. Hasn't happened at all today (YET!) and just to be on the safe side I made sure to make other copies of the .exe but I remain confused.

Has anything like this happened to anyone else?

Maybe your anti-virus software detected it as malware?

Okay, it was still in the correct folder this morning... so maybe the other day was just cursed or something.

No, I use 2 programs regularly and it's on both of their exceptions lists.

I checked there first.

Check your drive's condition with proper software. Perhaps it's time to make a switch before you lose any files?

All for Windows:
Checking file system: Open a console with administrative rights and enter chkdsk d: /f
To check the device itself (SMART infos): CrystalDiskInfo for example.
And also have a look into the event log (eventvwr.msc>Administrative Events).

But usually disk or file system failures don't let one (!) file disappear.

Yeah but it's easy to miss inconsequential leftover docs or dependencies of software you used sometime last century. UT's exe was detected as missing because EG constantly uses it.
