Similar to Mario Brothers, I don't think it will ever die completely.
Unreal retains its popularity I believe because it is cheap, easy to play and doesn't require sign up fees, dues or payments of any kind. You don't even need a user ID or password.
Anyone anywhere in the world can launch a server on their home computer.
Plus it has a 3D editor which is fast, simple, and anything you can imagine you can build it. Even as old and simple as it is, it still looks great.
Fast, simple, cheap, immersive, beautiful, smart, and cool as hell.
How do we stop from UT dieing?

Re: How do we stop from UT dieing?
UT is no longer for sale, but Epic has not waived the rights, so it cannot be distributed publicly by individuals and is effectively only linked within a closed community.
Since UT is no longer for sale, new players have no choice but to obtain it through illegal means, and distributors must take legal risks.
I think Epic is turning a blind eye to this for now, but I think if someone at Epic were to be open about this, more people would be able to play UT.

Re: How do we stop from UT dieing?
I started playing in 2002 and I can remember seeing over a 1000 people at a time online playing UT.
Started a server a few years later and always had a crowd, with some nights people were waiting to get in.
But slowly new "flashier" games came along, and UT started losing its magic.
Sad but I've passed out my "UT discs" to 15 different people over the years but none of them are playing anymore.
And recently I showed the game to a couple very young coworkers, and they laughed when I showed them my "UT discs".
Which brings up the question...is UT99 playable on an iPhone?

Big fan of eye-strain, are you?
Not necessarily, as some of us still have the installation discs... and thus can install it on other's systems who live conveniently nearby.

A game only really dies when nobody comes back to it. But when 25 years later, people are making alternative servers, and there are still people making maps and skins. I think that's the best way to tell if we're talking about a great game that's never really going to die, even better than the test scores at the time.

Re: How do we stop from UT dieing?
Kind of meant in jest...
But what you see now, in those that play UT99, are people that hate change and can't move on...kind of like you and me.
Plus, I don't see the "younger" generation picking up a hard-to-get game from 1999 when there are so many newer games out there to play.
So, much like Pacman and Donkey Kong will never die...UT99 will never die...until we die...
