Might have a problem

Post by EvilGrins »

Start menu isn't opening up.

Not when I click on it with the mouse...
Not when I hit Ctrl-Tab...

First occurred last night.

Thoughts?

I was thinking more constructive concepts.

Not currently on the budget, which is very limited at the moment.

Reinstall is a good concept BUT...

Sometimes, even if very rarely, I have this same bug on Win11, where no matter how hard I try, Start Menu doesn't raise.

Going to task manager and force-closing explorer.exe, then running explorer.exe again solves it for me. Can you try this and get back to us?

If the action suggested by Delacroix doesn't work then :

The first thing is to check the integrity of the disc and of the file system. In a post on your previous technical issue, Barbie indicated how to do that so I would suggest finding that post and carrying out the steps set out.

After that you can check the UT log to see if there any indication of the source of the issue (packages that can't be found or can not be loaded). Also Windows must have some form of system log/tool that reports what is or is not loaded when processes/apps are run - check that as well.

I assume that your mouse works OK in other apps? Presumably you get the same issue in all your UT installations (IIRC you have more than one on your HD)?

I have no knowledge of recent Windows versions but I understand that the system has software to prevent the execution of certain processes/apps - I presume that nothing in the Windows system is blocking the implementation of UT processes?

It looks to me that, given your previous issues, there is either a problem with the disc and/or file system or a possible problem with the corruption of certain UT system files.

If the result of the checks is that everything is OK or that are issues which the software can repair then, if it were me, I would install a basic clean version of UT 436 from an installation disc (you have Unreal Anthology and presumably have discs for that?) and then install UT469d on top of that and see how that works (with 469d you get clean, uptodate UT system files).

IF the action suggested by Delacroix does work, I would still suggest you check the disc/file system integrity - if it were me, and I had the disc space, I would set up a clean, new install of UT 436/469 and work/play with that as there do seem to be issues with your current UT installation.

Tried that but it didn't have a "force close" or "end" option, just used "restart" option which was there.

Didn't work.

If corruptions start popping up, then perhaps a new HDD/SSD might be in order, budget issues be damned. Looks like file corruptions start piling up, a typical syndrome of drive on its last legs.

Think it might've been a system update, but by the end of that day things were working again.
