It will always have security holes but it will have the most programs and patches that will keep it alive for at least 50 years.

Eventually Microsoft will fix all the security problems making it the most secure and usable OS, knocking every other OS off the market.

Will Microsoft Windows die? Incoming: Chrome OS!

Post by Myth »

(this thread is somewhat similar to this one, however this one is about OS in general and not gaming, and that thread started getting off topic (and I really wanted to make it a poll) )

Even whit the evolution of computers, better processors and graphics accelerators the problems whit windows always remains. It's been hated by IT professional from the first of it's days. I even have texts from the dos era that claims windows to be a 26 megabyte virus that slows down your PC. Nowadays it's more like a 5 gigabyte virus.
Remember when you first started up Windows 3.0 or Windows 95 how slow your computer was? Even to play games you had to reboot to MS-DOS mode. Remember how many times a week you had to reinstall Windows 98 because all those viruses? Remember how many times Windows ME failed? Remember those long boot times on Windows 2000? Remember how many bugs and problems Windows XP have when it was released? How about Windows Vista? Is it any better than any of it's predecessors?
Maleware, viruses, hackers 99% of these target windows and it's security flaws.
There is a reason why most servers run on Linux, and military computers use proprietary software.

Now I want you to read these 2 articles:
http://rixstep.com/2/20090601,00.shtml
http://rixstep.com/1/20090708,00.shtml
(you can find lots of other interesting articles on that website)
And the official Google announcement from their blogsite: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/ ... me-os.html

It's a really interesting read for anyone interested in computers. It explains major security flaws of Windows and why they just can they fixed and that Google is coming whit a brand new OS. Yes Google, unlike Netscape and many others, it has a chance to stand against Microsoft.

Chrome OS will be an OS made for the internet. Built on Linux, made to be simple, you turn it on and browse your favorite Websites, no viruses, no security problems. Based on Linux? That means even UT will run on it, and I'm sure that it will WINE or some other Windows emulator. At least that's what its expected to become, it might just fail...

My opinion: is the 2nd option of the poll. It will be crushed in about 20 years. I don't believe that Google will manage to make an OS that good in the next few years. And Google may be even more evil than Microsoft. Note that they store every search you made, even on Google earth and they can figure out where you live and what you like. There were cases when murderers were discovered because they were searching for methods on how to get rid of a dead body on Google.

What's your opinion?

Haha,

It was out of market when the Google guys thought of bringing the chrome OS. If there would have been an option for lesser years, i would have selected that. I think it would be out in 5 years or so. :highfive:

Rohit

Do you think Microsoft will sit around and wait to be overtaken? They're not exactly poor, they can put more money into R&D (right now they put more money into advertising). Maybe they'll "poach" some programmers from the open-source community and start a new OS from scratch.

That sounds gud....

But what microsoft is interested currently in is making another one of there buggy OS out in the market with a BANG. What their past record has shown is that they cannot innovate something by themselves. Examples :

1. Copied DOS written by our well known Tim Paterson and made the core of their OS.
2. Copied mouse technology from MAC and created a Windows 3.1 on top of the DOS :)
3. Copied the original Mac with Windows 95 :D

Hehe... now i exactly don't know what they have copied to make windows 7  but surely...
They will copy the idea floated by google for chrome OS and come up with a brand new solution. :loool: Jus' wait nd see..
Regards,
Rohit

I think I just pissed myself. If Google can get that thing bundled with PCs it will be instant-screwed for Microsoft and a huge leap for Linux and computer technology in general. If that takes off that will pretty much make alternative operating systems the largest development platform out there and pretty soon (sooner than I thought) the best gaming one when you consider the fact that a few game developers are starting to take Linux seriously and that WINE can handle most Windows applications as it is (albeit with quite a few bugs). I highly recommend that everybody supports Chrome and other open-source systems, because the only thing keeping them away from prime time is the lack of support from developers. The systems themselves run A LOT better, even when emulating stuff that was meant for other platforms in some cases. If everybody starts developing for Unix and Linux, then you basically can have the operating system of your dreams because Linux and Unix aren't actually operating systems, but merely the kernels that they're built off of.

Windows 95 was a reverse-engineered Mac OS 6 and Windows NT (Which is what XP is based off of) has a lot of stuff stolen from the open-source community that MS later tried to sue the original creators for having. All those pretty special effects and the ability to mount ISOs all happened Linux first. They pretty much just steal what they can and try to establish monopolies. On top of that Windows first appeared in the early 80s as "home" system with no security or multiple logins in mind and starts out as a single user interface that branches out (which is why having several user logins sucks). Linux on the other hand was built totally open to the world (this allows more people to add to it and modify it) to resemble Unix which was pretty much polar opposite of early Windows and has a multi user interface that narrows down. The whole system is sand boxed meaning IF it does get infected you can pretty much isolate the problem wherever it started and just replace whatever user's directory was compromised. Funny how I know all this and I've only been a Linux user for one year.

Indeed. Windows has the most support from developers. That's why I and everyone else uses windows.
For example WINE isn't perfect... and I can't even properly configure my sound card under linux. Alsa does almost everything automatically and on my rig it fails.
