As for the age, I know a few people older than that in UT, so it's not surprising (at least to me). After all, UT is an old game always bringing new experiences, from kids to grownups (for instance, I already saw many parents instigating their own children to play UT instead of other fps games
).
Actually, having people from 5 years old to even 50's ones active in UT, is what it makes this game and the whole community very very interesting and confortable, imho.

Quite young, and I already learned a lot, yet a lot still to learn and to improve...
Either ways, having people 2,5x my age in UT is quite funny. Generally a game has only a small range regarding age, UT even beats the other games on that, as the diversity are on players themselves lol

Actually - Most of the people I know in the UT world are on the older end of life, with many above the 40 to 50 range.
Maybe not that way with other games? (I don't know)
But, I think UT99 has become a refuge for older game players.
I am not saying there are not a lot of young players into UT, but I see at least as many older players myself.
