It's usually user error that results in 'security risks' where irc is concerned. Just don't click on any links that you don't know/trust and use a firewall & antivirus just in case (the ones I use are free and very good).
I must admit tho, mIRC is a bit daunting to a newbie. Maybe we could create a tutorial to get everyone a bit more familiar with it?
