I doubt we all started with Unreal

The very first 1st person shooter I can recall was Wolfenstein. At least it was the first one I ever played. There were a bunch of games that followed it, in essentially the same format, but Wolfenstein was the first for me...and I mean classic Wolfenstein that came out in the early 1990's too. I never played the followup.

We're all hooked on UT99, or else we wouldn't be here. I'm just curious what other ones led us all to this place, figuratively speaking.

1st person shooters I played prior to UT99:
- Wolfenstein
- Blake Stone
- Hexen
- Doom

Okay, so I didn't play a lot.

What 1st person shooters did you play before you found UT99?

Also used to play a game called ROTT a lot. (Rise of the Triad) It was a lot of fun.

For me indeed it started with UT. I never played any FPS before. Actually the very first map I saw afaik was either DM-Gothic or DM-Deck16][.

UT was my first FPS on the PC, prior to that I was a console player. Goldeneye 007 on the N64 FTW among others

No, it didn't start with UT, but in fact with Unreal. And the love for Singleplayer remains until today

Hexen (never finished)
Heretic (never finished)
many similar FPS ...Coridor7, Black Stone, Noa's Arc (all never finished) (N.A. was an accident)

Then...
King-Pin LoC (first Polygon FPS) ...this game left his marks in my life.

First I thought ....UT is no fun to play a fucked up aiming (I didn't know some one before me left the auto-aim on) I killed myself many times cause I didn't know how this damn rockets work.

I started with Doom, too (and all related id tech 1 games, such as heretic & hexen and strife). I have some vague memories of actually playing an Unreal demo prior to starting with UT (right when it became GOTY), though.

My first fps was as well Ut99,but not completley sure tho. but the first shooting game i think i played was Syphon filter on the PS1

It started with Unreal, but it was so scary to play back then that i didnt come further than the first levels lol x) (was a little kid), so I watched my brother play Unreal .
Then switched over to UnrealTournament and played a lot offline, because we had dial-up internet so you had to pay per min or so..
