If using ready made decos is not part of the restriction there are already a variety of decent trees available (even ones that shake when hit). No, buying the complete Unreal collection wont solve anything. The GoG version is the GOTY version (minus the second CD) OMP-UT-V0.2 is not the newer build in the list at the OldUnreal site. Have you changed the windowed renderer to match the one you are using to play ?
The default renderer for windows elements and UEd is the old DX7 renderer.
Also make sure you have run the DirectX 9 installer at some point so you have full support for older modes.
