importing Unreal2 into ut99
It started in my Screenshots for Fun thread with this...
...and my asking why the original Dispersion pistol had never been upgraded.
That led to a chat, this all occured within ut99.org, about the Dispersion Pistol from Unreal2 and possible getting that ported into ut99. Most said this could not be done because U2 isn't an Epic game.
So I poked around a bit on google and found this:
http://forums.beyondunreal.com/showthread.php?t=175819
I've been bopping messages back and forth with that guy the past week. Turns out he found it all but impossible to do, after trying it for awhile, but he redirected me to another thread.
That being this one:
http://forums.beyondunreal.com/showthread.php?t=194782
This is all WAY beyond me, so I thought I'd share it with those of you more versed in this stuff.
So... thoughts?
Is it do·able??

almost everything is doable, but as stated by the other guys unreal2 is NOT made by Epic so there are legal issues here (copyright stuff etc). So you cant just import it from that game..
But I dont think many people would really care.... :/

Yeah I know but I've seen plenty of U2 in ut2004 already.Metalfist wrote:almost everything is doable, but as stated by the other guys unreal2 is NOT made by Epic so there are legal issues here (copyright stuff etc). So you cant just import it from that game..

Is this now a competition ?? Who gets the smallest?EvilGrins wrote:My tiny font is tinier than your tiny font!Metalfist wrote:But I dont think many people would really care.... :/
Ok btt... I'll prefer to have a new model of the dispersion pistol for UT and not a bulky squirt gun... Something cool and still transformable like the original one... but better in a visual way.

Of course not. Don't be silly.papercoffee wrote:Is this now a competition ?? Who gets the smallest?EvilGrins wrote:My tiny font is tinier than your tiny font!Metalfist wrote:But I dont think many people would really care.... :/
That would be ideal, yes. Just so long as it remains a weak, slow moving, projectile with unlimited range.papercoffee wrote:Ok btt... Re: importing Unreal2 into ut99
Just saying
Unreal 2 content has already been used within UT2004 (textures within FOT packs, UTXMP) or UT1 (textures)
UT3 content has already been used within UT2004 (ut3 weapons for ut2004) or UT1 (our mappack ^^)
Unreal Championship 1 and 2 content has already been used for UT2004 (UC2004, Unreal championship mappacks). Even showcased on epics forum! All important combinations of content usage are already sampled. I have not heared of any legal actions or something like that at any point in the past. Stop worrying about that. As long you do not take Unreal related content to other GAMES or simply outside of epics territory, nothing will happen!
Hint: No unreal related games for UDK, the only exception from which I know about!

About to be non-active
My very last UT map project: CTF-FacePalm (tropical CTF-Face remake)
Why do I leave? click here
What I want to do next: Joining an UDK team (uncertain however) and improve 3D modelling and texture editing skills
Thanks to those who visibly supported me until/at the end!
My reactivated account on indiedb.com.

Re: importing Unreal2 into ut99
Well, Unreal 2 was developed by Legend Entertainment, which no longer exists: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_Entertainment
And afaik, it's still being sold bundled with other Unreal/UT titles as Unreal Anthology, and it seems that as far as who owns what, it's still a bit confusing:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unreal_%28series%29
So, although before it was downright forbidden use Unreal 2, nowadays I don't think that's an issue, and if someday you're confronted, you can argue back saying it's an Unreal sequel and comes bundled with all the other major Unreal/UT titles by Epic, so...
Well, at least I am using Unreal 2 stuff myself as well (sounds for the most part, a few base textures to make skins and such out of them), so as far as my personal view on things are:
- The original developer no longer exists
- Unreal 2 is sold together with all the other Epic Unreal titles
- Unreal 2 was supposed to be the sequel of Unreal
- There was a financial confrontation between Epic and Atari for this title alone
So for me, as a "client", the Epic Eula may as well apply to Unreal 2, thus using their stuff. Don't worry.

Re: importing Unreal2 into ut99
Oooo - you sure about that!? Seems a guy i knew that informed us (@up, back in the day) regarding the "official rein statement" regarding usage of epic assets -also- provided me with animated control panel textures straight from U2 which I used "unchanged" for SimpleX ... also derdak ripped and packaged a U2 music module for use in SimpleX... Many of the graphics in that map were Composites using U2 graphics as bases - so I guess we've been collectively bad boys (like half the mappers in the ut universe) if what you say is trueFeralidragon wrote:...So, although before it was downright forbidden use Unreal 2...
Actually, I'm not sure MR made any distinction about the products, i can't find his original statement, but i remember it implied U2 as well, since many mappers went about raiding the store, so to speak. I bought Unreal 2 for both PC and xbox, and the *main* copyright notice is EPIC, in both cases. So for all intents it is assumed to be an EPIC title (imo) where Legend was the developer (ala RTNP). Alas, I agree it probably doesn't matter much now, although I wouldn't mind seeing that MR post again, or other comments from Epic...
Maybe I should feel guilty... (or not

Who wants to use this squirt gun from unreal 2 ??
We should make a new one what still could fit in the oldschool mod.
Even a new game-type could be done with this gun.

Re: importing Unreal2 into ut99
^ Well, Unreal 2 copyrights and stuff are somewhat on topic, no?
The OP should be aware if he should be able to use assets from the game or not for whatever Unreal 2 based projects he may come up with...
@FraGnBraG: Well, I assume it was forbidden due to copyright, given it was made by a different developer and things just got a bit ugly when the developer closed doors and the game was in the hands of their publisher. Right now, I think there's no problem, but back then, I am not so sure though, however either ways, Unreal 2 was supposed to be a sequel in the Unreal series, so for all the effects it can be somewhat safely assumed it's covered by the Epic EULA on the UT/Unreal series.
But as far as I can really tell, unlike you and many people around, I only entered the scene a few years ago (perhaps 3-4 years ago?), so everything I know before that time is based on what I see written around as "history" somewhat, so if you say it was always ok, I guess you're right.

*ahem*
I don't know that the 'squirt' gun, ie: the U2 Dispersion Pistol, would need to work with oldskool. Ideally if it were made it would be a mutator all it's own. I mean 'oldskool' was called that as it involved stuff from the original Unreal game. If it's gonna be kept to 'skool' the squirt would be a part of the 'newskool'.

What ever school...EvilGrins wrote: 'newskool'.
I meant that this new dispersion pistol could fit ...not it should be included.
A standalone mutator ...but usable for UT and any SP project.

Sorry for the lil' necro bump, semi-okay as it's my thread, but this is definitely related.
There's finally an upgrade to the dispersion pistol now in UT3's Legacy:
