I have to point out the following for whoever uses these models in UT:
- generally artists put the amount of "polys" and not "tris".
The used modelling programs support quads (single polys with 4 vertexes instead of just 3), and in the model statistics this is therefore just a single poly.
However, all the iterations of Unreal Engine (if I'm not mistaken) do not support quads for models, and therefore once they are exported, all quads are split into 2 tris (1 quad poly -> 2 tri polys), and thus a model which was advertised to have only 500 polys, may have in fact up to 1.000 in-game.
So be careful and double check both these models and any model you produce for the game with said tools, things can go south in performance very very quickly and make you wonder why if you only look at the modeler stats.
The number of vertexes is also a very important number, since many of these polys may not be weld together making the vertex count skyrocket as well, which not only affects performance, as the LOD morphing goes to hell as well.

The "relativity" of high and low anything, is why I posted a couple of the basic models.
Many of them would need simplifying as well as converting.
As Ferali says, it is unlikely you can just import and save these, but conversion of 3DS models into geometry seems to becoming more popular, so I thought people may like to play with these.
Things like the book-cabinets and packing-crates could be made into decorations, but most of it should be torn apart to use as the base for what you need.
I figured that as many tools and packages are available, and 3DS is a common format, people may like to get some practice with more than just rocks and trees etc.
Many of the models and pawns we use were originally higher quality imports from other games.
Converting and comparing (or failing to), is often a good way to learn about the differences in engines and formats.
Having access to 3D models also makes it easier to build your own version from scratch as you can start with a design you like, and already have all the measurements.
BTW. The author is experienced with using the Unreal engine, so can offer help and advice via his forum.
Also shoot me for saying it, but there are other things (not Unreal) that you can use these with.

UEd supports importing DXF brushes, so some of the simpler brushes do not need converting and will import.

Gotta ask about this. I'm guessing Unreal Ed in UT99 don't use .3ds? As I see they can use .2ds, and saw somewhere that the .3ds will work on uED that come with UT2k3/2k4?

At least Paper is awake (well full of coffee anyway)
No unfortunately UE1 cannot import 3DS files , and this is a pain as it is a very common format.
Conversion tools is something more of we will have to deal with, the further away we get from 1998.
Models are also getting more complex, so tools are more necessary than ever to simplify them for import into UE1.
If you have a newer UT, you can use the editor in that to convert some files into something UT99 can digest.
Hopefully that other thread will become far more useful as people do some comparisons and tests.

I really haven't seen any .3ds to whatever so idk.
Latest UT? I thought UT2k3 or 2k4 can use .3ds as Angel's mapper site show?
