Different size files but same name

Post by Smitdog »

Hi All,

I downloaded some maps that have the same file but one is bigger than the other, this one is called, 'ChaosUT.u' and others are called, 'MyLevel.utx' 'sin2ut' and 'BotPack.uax'.

So, if I replace them with the current, will the other dependent maps still work with the newer files?

Thanks,
-Smitdog

'MyLevel.utx' and 'BotPack.uax'? Sounds like BS already.
Each package (utx, uax, u, umx) can only exist once. Basically you can not have a Botpack.u and a Botpack.uax. The directories only serve as optical help, but you could also put anything in a single directory instead (requieres a reconfugration of the pathes only in the INI). The engine thinks of both files as a single one. AFAIK with WoTGreal you can seperate u packages. The sounds of Botpack would be saved as Botpack.uax (within sounds), the texture content would be stored within Botpack.utx. And whoever created a package called MyLevel is a freaking idiot! MyLevel content gets saved within the map itself. By using the content and saving the map it will be saved! Better forget about that trash, it can not be anything good!

Good job you asked.
ChaosUT.u should not have been put with the map. It is a core part of the Chaos mod.
Just make sure you have the latest version.
If you installed UT GOTY edition, then make sure you keep the one from that.
If you are not sure, then you can get the full Chaos mod from http://chaoticdreams.org

MyLevel.utx is the result of someone misunderstanding the idea of "MyLeveling" textures and resources, so unfortunately is likely to be different.
If you open them with UEd, you can see if they contain different or extra textures.

Sin2ut
Check the files from the mod http://www.moddb.com/mods/sin2ut

Again for the sound file, you will have to open with UEd and compare.

This is a good topic.
If a map contains accompanying, I never overwrite ANYTHING that already exists on my server.
I have encountered a few mismatching files and took a wild guess at not replacing them.
There are a few ChaosUT files, among others, that seem to have problems.
Has anyone ever composed a STANDARD list or spreadsheet of UT files and their size/version?
This sounds like a great project but I have to repair my fence, fix my car's fuel pump, fix a leaky faucet, date a few babes, go to an art show...

Maybe not. Inexperienced mappers often make files they think are great for their thing, that are unnecessary.

I've seen more than a few MyLevel.utx files since ut99 was first released with various downloads I've grabbed.

Yes, it DOES!
"He, she, it -> S muss mit".

People who are doing (specially creating such files) that are somehow stupid and did not read the basic tutorials, this is avoidable. And everytime I found such maps I immediately deleted them.

Insert UT disc into drive, check out files list. Profit! UT2004 has a big and rather complex list of texture and static mesh files, but UT is actually rather simple in these matters.
